James Luttrell
of Dublin, Barber Surgeon

James Luttrell
was the son of
Richard Luttrell who died in 1633 in Tankardstown, co Meath
Richard was the grandson of Sir Thomas Luttrell of Luttrellstown,
Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in Ireland, who died 1554.

James' mother was
Anne Cusack,
descendant of Sir Thomas Cusack of Cussington, co. Meath,
Lord Chancellor of Ireland.

Siblings of James Luttrell

Bro. - Oliver who married (1)Margery, daughter of William Walsh of Killincauge,
and (2) Jane __________ (shown on Will info for Oliver).
Sister - Jane married to Rowland Plunket of Cocklestown;
and sister- Mary m. to George Bathe of Edickstown, co. Meath

Upon the death of Richard Luttrell, in 1633, James was still underaged (predicting a DOB of 1616 or later).
His brother Oliver inherited the family estate.
Oliver participated in the Irish Rebellion of 1641.  He was attainted for this rebellion upon the English victory.
All of the family property was confiscated in 1643.

“Those of the name attainted in 1642 were Robert Luttrell of Girstown, and Oliver Luttrell of Tankardstown, County of Meath.”

*James may have married, according to Chancery Court records of 1642.
Court records show a James Luttrell and his wife, Ellinor, as plaintiffs in a Chancery Court suit.

*There are records from St Michan’s Church, Dublin (only church on the north side of Dublin) showing
 burial dates for
4 "sonnes of James Luttrell"
George - 1637; Patricke - 1640; James - 1640; Gregory – 1653
It is certainly possible that these 4 "sonnes of James Luttrell" could be sons of different James'
but records for any James Luttrell in mid 1600s Ireland are scarce.
There is a 1640 Chancery Court suit showing James Luttrell and Robert Luttrell as defendants.
James and "his wife" Ellinor are pltfs in the 1642 suit, and
there is a 1646 Chancery Court suit showing James Luttrell as a plaintiff.

According to Col. Simon Luttrell's Succession Order (see below)
James had two sons that outlived him -
Patrick (may have been born after death of 1st child named Patrick in 1640)
and Luke (Biblical physician's name for son of a "barber surgeon")

James Luttrell appears to have been a barber surgeon
and died in 1660.

The Index for IR Wills shows

James Luttrell    1660     Dublin    barber surgeon

This is the James Luttrell of Tankardstown, County Meath, Ireland
that many Luttrell researchers have claimed may be the immigrant to America in the 1670s
and who died in Northumberland County, Virginia in 1698.

What's in a name?

Richard Luttrell of Tankardstown, co Meath, named his two sons, Oliver and James (acc. to Burke).  Neither name was common in the Luttrell families of Ireland at this time.  Oliver is not previously found and James was only the given name of a couple of other Luttrells. James, who died 1557, son of Sir Thomas Luttrell of Luttrellstown, was the brother of Robert Luttrell of Tankardstown, Richard's father.
A James Luttrell, tupperbyer, is shown on a 1587 Will.
There was also a James Luttrell mentioned in a 1599 deed regarding Thomas Luttrell of Luttrellstown who married Eleanor Chevers.
Henry Luttrell of Giltons, co Kildare was the attorney.  James Luttrell and Oliver Chevers were witnesses.
Thomas Luttrell of Luttrellstown was a first cousin to Richard Luttrell of Tankardstown.
Both Oliver and James name a son "Patrick".
