Oliver Luttrell
of Tankardstown, county Meath, Ireland

Son of Richard Luttrell (d. 1633) of Tankardstown,
and
grandson of Robert Luttrell of Tankardstowne
who was the fourth son of Sir Thomas Luttrell of Luttrellstown.

Oliver was at least 17 at the death of his father so his DOB is about 1616 or earlier.

Children of Oliver Luttrell
include
Michael Luttrell (20)
Patrick Luttrell (20)

Oliver Luttrell died Feb 1668
(per probate - see below)

“Sir Thomas Luttrell of Luttrellstown married (1) Anne Aylmer, d/o Bartholomew Aylmer, esq. of Lyons, Co. Kildare and by her had two sons and two daughters. . .
Richard – his heir
Robert – married Elizabeth, 2nd dau of Robert Rochfort Esq. of Kilbride and was father of Richard Luttrell, esq. of Tankardstown, Co. Meath, who married Anne, dau of Robert Cusack of Cussington, co. Meath and d. in Oct. 1633 leaving two sons and two daughters, viz. (1) Oliver of Tankardstown; (2) James; (1) Jane married to Rowland Plunket of Cocklestown; and (2) Mary m. to George Bathe of Edickstown, co. Meath”
(From Burke’s Extinct Peerages. . . A Genealogical History of the Dormant: Abeyant, Forfeited, and Extinct ... By Sir Bernard Burke pg 340)

The 4 children of Richard and Ann were probably found in Richard Luttrell’s Will (probably destroyed in Irish Records Office fire 1922). James was the only one not married. His age can only be estimated. He is thought to be "James Luttrell, Dublin, barber surgeon, d. 1660".   Irish Manuscripts (below) shows sons of Oliver Luttrell of Tankardstown as well as James' sons, Patrick and Luke. The Irish Manuscript info is probably from 1670s. A James Luttrell is shown as an immigrant to America in the late 1660s. It is not documented but many American Luttrell researchers have claimed that the James of Tankardstown is the American immigrant, but. . . .

In Appendix to Calendar of Inquisitions of County Dublin (20)
c. 1673. . .in a listing of (Col.) Simon Luttrell’s order of succession (he was childless). . .
First listed are any sons by his wife, Catherine Newcomen, alias Luttrell; then to “Simon’s heirs male by any other wife”; then, to his brother, Henry or Henry’s sons; then, to Thomas Luttrell, Simon’s “third brother” (? Second brother?) or Thomas’ son; then, to “Robert Luttrell of Symonstowne, co. Kildare, gent., Simon’s uncle” or his sons;
then, to “Michael, s. of Oliver Luttrell of Tankardstowne, gent.,
to Patrick another s. of Oliver”. . . .
(Curiosity - still referred to as "of Tankardstowne" even though he forfeited the property years earlier???)

Oliver Luttrell apparently was Catholic and fought with the Irish Army against the English (Protestant) forces, consequently, losing the estate at Tankardstown

Those of the name attainted in 1642 were Robert Luttrell of Girstown, and Oliver Luttrell of Tankardstown, County of Meath. (31)

Possible Close Relationship

Robert Luttrell of Liscartan (near Tankardstown) is shown (deceased) in Col Simon's Order of Succession (c. 1673)
as father of Oliver and Michael.
Both Robert of Liscartan and Oliver of Tankardstown name sons, Michael.
Did Robert name a son after Oliver Luttrell of Tankardstown?
There was a Robert Luttrell of Girstown (Garristown) attainted in 1642 as was Oliver Luttrell of Tankardstown.
Could Robert of Girstown (1642) be the same person as Robert Luttrell of Liscartan
and a close relative of Oliver Luttrell of Tankardstown?

Henry Luttrell, together with a Thomas Luttrell, both described of Luttrellstown, County of Dublin, outlawed in 1691, as were Oliver Luttrell of Tankardstown in Meath (whose estate was granted to Col. Slade and others), Robert Luttrell of Simonsown, County of Kildare, and William Luttrell of Dublin, Junior. Simon Luttrell and his wife were likewise attainted.

Possible error - Oliver of Tankardstown attainted 1642 after Irish Rebellion of 1641 and not alive in 1691.  His sons were shown in Col. Simon Luttrell's succession order (probably mid 1670s).

What's in a name?

Richard Luttrell of Tankardstown, co Meath, named his two sons,
Oliver and James (acc. to Burke).
Neither name was common in the Luttrell families of Ireland at this time. Oliver is not previously found and James was only the given name of a couple of other Luttrells.

James, who died 1557, son of Sir Thomas Luttrell of Luttrellstown,
seems to be the first Luttrell named "James".  He was the
brother of Robert Luttrell of Tankardstown, Richard's father.

A James Luttrell, tupperbyer, is shown on a 1587 Will.

There was also a James Luttrell mentioned in a 1599 deed regarding Thomas Luttrell of Luttrellstown who married Eleanor Chevers.
Henry Luttrell of Giltons, co Kildare was the attorney. James Luttrell and Oliver Chevers were witnesses.
Thomas Luttrell of Luttrellstown was a first cousin to Richard Luttrell of Tankardstown.
Both Oliver and James name a son "Patrick".
